Doors of Opportunity
In the inspiring movie “Temple Grandin” the luminous Clare Danes plays the world-famous animal scientist and autism self-advocate Dr. Temple Grandin. The metaphor of a closed door was used whenever the character faced a fork in the road, a challenge or new opportunity. For autistic Temple, who needed order and familiar patterns to feel safe, the unknown was especially frightening. Determined to overcome her disability and embrace her destiny, Temple learned to tell herself that when these challenges arose they were “just doors to be walked through.” At several pivotal moments in her story, she plucked up her courage, pressed forward boldly and stepped into the unknown.Press On and Take Hold
In much the same way, we all can feel uncertain and afraid when new challenges or opportunities present themselves in life. We are creatures of habit and change can be threatening. For a Christian, however, the Bible urges us to “press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (Phil. 3:12) He assures us: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8). He also promises that though we “walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we should fear no evil” for He is with us. (Psalm 23:4).
With such assurances, let us embrace the doors of opportunity God brings and run the unique race marked out for each one us!
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13) |
