Small Efforts Can Change the World

For those living in or visiting Southern California, a must see is the Skirball Center’s exhibition “Women Hold Up Half the Sky,” a powerful blend of photos, documentaries, visual art and interactive opportunities to prevent the malignancy of sex trafficking, maternal mortality and gender discrimination in nations around the world.  Not only is the exhibit design outstanding, but I appreciate so much how it provides many wonderful ways in which to respond.

Would My Efforts Even Matter?
How many times, when we hear of horrible suffering in some region have we felt overwhelmed, guilty and at a loss as to how to help.  It’s typical to ask, “Would anything I do even make a dent?”

Tempted to Tune Out
Most of us haven’t got the time, money or bandwidth to take on one more thing. How tempting it is to want to tune out and feel that a small effort won’t accomplish anything. Yet, I work with a ministry in a remote part of southeast India where the price of two  buckets of American movie popcorn will pay for a monthly teacher’s salary.

In God’s Hands, Small Is Not Insignificant
If our heart is in the right place, God can take your small loaves and fishes and multiply these in unimaginable ways.  And it’s not only money that counts, but time, talent, ideas, networks, prayer…whatever!  If we give to God what we’ve got, however small, and say “It’s not much, but please use it for your glory in this situation,” He will!

You Do Make a Difference
Don’t buy the lie that your efforts don’t count. And they don’t need to be perfect, either. When we partner with God, he will work in us and through us, so everything we do, large or small, can make a positive and lasting contribution.

“With man, this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  (Matthew 12:26)
“Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.”  (Micah 6:8)
